Windows Antivirus Pro has emerged in the past few weeks as one of the most successful new attack programs on the internet, compromising countless PCs with a program designed to trick users into buying a completely worthless spyware scanner.  This is a familiar tactic used by the publishers of this type of scamware, effectively forcing those who have been attacked to pay a ransom in order to get their PC back to an operational state.  Windows Antivirus Pro is the latest in a long sequence of illicit programs distributed by shadowy cyber-criminals who operate from far-flung bases overseas, largely out of reach of the domestic justice system.

Like most junkware programs, Windows Antivirus Pro is difficult to remove, attaches itself deeply into an infected system, and actively resists removal.  It may also disable several common antispyware programs in an effort to prevent those programs from doing what they are supposed to.

It is not clear what type of privacy threat Windows Antivirus Pro may present.  For that reason, infected computers should be cleaned as soon as possible and should not be used for things like internet banking or shopping while in an infected state.

Windows Antivirus Pro can be removed manually, although such a removal should only be attempted by individuals with a reasonable level of technical competence.  Otherwise, a commerical-grade spyware scanner should do the trick.
